Landmark Lighting, V&A Waterfront Cape Town, 2010

This sequence of photographs, the collective work of a band of wind-lashed photographers (Hamish Niven, Steve Bailey, Dieter Lampl and Trevor Wilkins), shows how events unfolded at our Rotary Landmark Lighting, at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town, February 23rd, 2010.

Storm clouds gathered throughout the day and one massive cumulus formation after another passed by, just south of the City.

Come 6:30pm, the wind had built significantly and an hour or so later was threatening to blow our photographers, gear and all, into the waters of Table Bay harbour.

The size of the cloud on Table Mountain, known by locals as the 'table cloth', is a measure of the the strength of the south east wind. As the images reflect, it grew considerably in the two hours captured here.

The 2009 Landmark Lighting event took place in balmy conditions but was not without an environmental  challenge.  Huge fires in the mountains of the Helderberg sent a pall of smoke across the Cape Peninsula and it was only after an hour that the floodlights on Table Mountain became visible.  International images of the 2009 Landmark Lighting can be found here.
